Takeshi states that “Power and corruption go hand in hand”. Do you believe it is possible to have power without becoming corrupt? In your view, are there any powerful yet moral characters in this story? Does Takeshi himself always use his power for good?

Takeshi changes with Tuyet’s guidance. Tuyet was always on the moral side. When she was living comfortably with Takeshi she still found a way to give back and help others less fortunate than herself.

I think that Tuyet teaches Takeshi to use his power for good.

History: After spending decades in prison, Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa and worked toward reconcilliation and nation-building rather than revenge. His leadership is often referenced as using power ethically.

The phrases “power and corruption go hand in hand” and “absolute power corrupts absolutely (Lord Acton), underscore the reality that power frequently leads to corruption. However, in both history and literature, there are excellent examples of individuals who have weilded power without abusing it.
Although offered in a very different context, there is a great quote from Robert Caro comes to mind:
“But although the cliche says that power always corrupts, what is seldom said … is that power always reveals. When a man is climbing, trying to persuade others to give him power, concealment is necessary. … But as a man obtains more power, camouflage becomes less necessary.”
