Consider the female characters in the book. What did this novel teach you about how women factor into the economy and progress of war? How did the burden of war differ for women than men at this time, and does it differ today? How does the author depict the women’s relationships with each other? What are their primary objectives? How are these objectives different or similar to the male characters’ objectives?

Historically, women and men experienced the burdens of war differently, with men typically engaging in combat and women managing the home front. Today these distinctions are somewhat less pronounced with women increasingly participating in combat roles while still shouldering significant responsibilities during and after conflict.

War has always been something felt by all, but I feel that women’s contributions to their communities during wartime are expected but not celebrated the way that men fighting in the war are.
